Kevin Barton is the District Attorney for Washington County. He was elected to office in 2018 and re-elected in 2022. Prior to becoming District Attorney, Mr. Barton served as a career prosecutor in the Washington County DA’s Office.

Former High School Teacher Enters Guilty Plea in Sex Abuse Case Involving Students
On January 14, 2026, Wymon Wayne Smith, age 67, pleaded guilty to sex abuse in the first degree and sex abuse in the second degree. Judge Kathleen Proctor sentenced the defendant to 75 months in prison.

On December 5, 2025, a Washington County jury found Leo Gabonia, age 49, guilty of five sex abuse-related charges.
