The Victim Assistance Program is a unit within the District Attorney's Office that supports crime victims as their case moves through the criminal justice process. The program's goal is to provide victims with assistance, services, and information about resources; to promote participation in the criminal justice system by educating victims about their rights; to advocate for the enforcement of these rights; and to coordinate with other community agencies to ensure continuity of support for victims. Every victim has an advocate assigned to their case to assist with the following services:
- Inform victims of their rights, and help them to invoke and uphold them
- Accompaniment at court throughout all stages of the criminal justice process
- Notification of court dates and case status
- Restitution requests and Crime Victims' Compensation Program applications
- Safety planning and referrals to community resources
- Support victims whose protective orders have been violated
The Washington County District Attorney's Office supports the rights of every victim throughout the criminal justice process, without regard to race, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, citizenship status, religion, or any other classification.
