On January 26, 2017, Deputy District Attorney Melanie Musial presented at the Trademark Counterfeiting & Piracy training at Nike World Headquarters. This training was hosted by the International Anti-Counterfeiting Coalition (IACC) Foundation, Homeland Security Investigations, Nike Inc. and Investigative Consultants. The attendees included about 50 law enforcement officials and federal agents from around the Pacific Northwest. The attendees learned what it takes to properly investigate trademark counterfeiting and piracy cases and the effects that these crimes have on the economy. Counterfeit items include pharmaceuticals, music, video games, jewelry, purses, perfumes and luxury goods. DDA Musial educated the attendees on the applicable Oregon statutes used to prosecute individuals who engage in this criminal conduct and what evidence is needed to proceed with the cases. She also provided case examples from some recent successful prosecutions under these laws.
