The Washington County District Attorney's Office released the results of a Washington County Major Crimes Team investigation into the death of Bryce Bybee while in custody in the Washington County Jail.  The investigation concluded that there is no evidence to support criminal charges related to the death.

At the time of his death, Mr. Bybee was in the custody of the Washington County jail facing charges including Robbery in the First and Second Degree and Unlawful Use of a Weapon.  A circuit court judge ordered Mr. Bybee to be transported to the Oregon State Hospital for mental health treatment, but that transport did not occur.  Mr. Bybee was found unresponsive in his jail cell on April 17, 2022.  Despite lifesaving efforts, deputies and medical personnel were unable to revive him.  An autopsy determined the cause of death to be "[c]omplications of schizoaffective disorder and self-neglect" and the manner of death to be "undetermined."  

Oregon law requires the District Attorney and Medical Examiner's Office to investigate deaths of incarcerated persons.  The Washington County Major Crimes Team, under the direction of the District Attorney, conducted this independent investigation.  A copy of a memorandum summarizing the investigation and legal review is available here and a letter from District Attorney Barton to Sheriff Garrett is available here.
